Marseille
Founded in 600 BC by Greek sailors from Phocaea, Marseille is the oldest French city and definitely the most complex. A city of contrasts with ancient city districts (Le Panier near the old port), a coastal road (corniche) bathed in light and looking out over the sea, wild rocky inlets (the calanques) which plunge down into deep blue waters along 20 km of coastline as far as Cassis.
